Hello, Bright Light, it’s
Georgette Star,Â
Â
I’m curious. Have you noticed that no matter how much evolutionary work you've done, no matter how many negative reaction triggers are no longer part of your reality, that your inner critic can still get activated from time to time? My inner critic can STILL get triggered no matter how far I’ve come on my evolutionary path but never for
long!Â
How about you?
Recently, it was 2:30 AM on my 63rd birthday. I was visiting the Oregon Coast and sat watching and listening to the drama of Mother Ocean amid a coastal storm. Wild winds howling, the surf crashing and pounding, everything was in an uproar around me. With that much dynamic, powerful energy and sound so close there was no way I was going to sleep. But that wasn’t all that was keeping me awake.
Earlier that day, out of the blue, my brother emailed me a photo of our dad I hadn’t seen before (photo below). I’m sure he didn’t realize it was my birthday. I noticed the synchronicity of this photograph showing up on my 63rd birthday because my dad died when he was 63.
This realization elicited a surge of inspiration to LIVE more fully and freely than ever before! However, right on the heels of that surge of inspiration another feeling surfaced. The expansive impulse to shine even brighter in my 63rd year competed with an equally strong impulse to contract, to just shut down and
fade away. This second impulse, an insidious mix of negative or limiting cultural conditioning, ancestral imprints and other influences, synthesized into one voice: the inner critic.
That night my inner critic whispered “You’re getting old and wrinkly; you’ve lost what beauty you had. It’s too late to try to give more, to make more of a difference. Elders have no power or place in this world and you’re on your way to becoming one. What you have to give isn’t relevant and it’s too spiritual anyway. It’s time to think about retiring. Wouldn’t this be so much easier?” While my Higher Self “stormed” those thoughts away.
We’ve all observed in ourselves, our clients and others how the inner critic can erode confidence, slow down creative momentum or stop us from even trying. It has the power to make us forget the truth of who we are.
To experience creative successful movement in our lives we learn to acknowledge that voice, face, feel and ultimately transcend its outdated beliefs and reactive patterns. As we practice tapping into the deeper truth of who we are, over and over again, eventually all that will remain will be faint impressions of power and control the inner critic once had over
us.
That night I experienced a negative trigger and chose to confront my inner critic. With the gift of perspective from my Dad, plus some perfectly timed Lightning and Thunder, I was able to harness the potency of that trigger to totally realign with the deeper truth of who I am (and of who you are too) in an instant.Â
